I had accepted the invitation out of courtesy. One of those Saturday family gatherings that stretch on until the early hours: grilled meat, music, kids running around, and adults who gradually loosen up. They introduced me as “the family friend who’s a lawyer,” so no one looked at me too closely.
I settled into a corner of the patio with a glass of white wine and simply watched.
Her name was Fernanda. The wife of the homeowner. In her thirties, well-kept body, short dresses that left nothing to the imagination. She moved among the guests with the confidence of someone who knows every male gaze is following her. I watched her out of the corner of my eye while chatting with the aunts.
The husband’s nephew was named Poncho. Eighteen years old at the time. Tall, well-built, easy smile. Excessively attentive. He refilled Fernanda’s glass before she even asked. He passed her the plate. He found her a chair. And above all, he asked her to dance.
At first it seemed innocent. Fernanda’s husband, sitting at a table with the brothers-in-law, even gestured to him: “Poncho, take your aunt out. Don’t let her just sit there.”
And Poncho obeyed. He took her by the waist with a naturalness that would have gone unnoticed by anyone… except me. I was used to noticing the details others ignore.
They danced close. Too close. She laughed with her head thrown back. He spoke into her ear. At one point, when the music dipped a little, I managed to catch the exchange:
“Auntie, you look really pretty in that dress.” “Do you like how I look, Alfonso?” “Yes… you’ve got some very tempting curves.”
Fernanda didn’t pull away. She only smiled sideways and changed the subject, but her fingers lingered a second too long on the young man’s shoulder.
I looked down at my glass. At that moment I still didn’t know that, months later, that same woman would call my office with a broken voice. Nor did I know that when I asked her the real reason, she would only look toward the window and say:
“It all started one Saturday… at a family gathering.”
That night I simply filed the detail away in silence. The way I always do.
In Part 2 I’ll tell you how the tension I observed from the corner of the patio turned into something that could no longer be hidden… not even in front of the whole family.
